Hajimewa In the Beginning by tsuminaoshi Hajimewa In the Beginning by tsuminaoshi
In the beginning nature wrought beauty upon the land like art across a blank canvas...

I know it's simple, but that's the point.

The kanji+hiragana says "Hajimewa" which roughly translates in to "In the Beginning."

I hope you enjoy it.
Last minute entry!

Domo arigato gozaimashita!

I was about to say that this makes me think of Okami, then I realised it WAS Okami XD

Great job, I love the simpleness, and how the background is gently faded :)

sorry if i look like a jerk or something, but it's just bothering me a tiny bit...

when は is a particle, like it's being used here, it is pronounced 'wa'. aside from that, は was the wrong particle for this use...に would have been better for "in the beginning" since the particle に normally goes with time.

again, i'm really sorry if i'm being rude or anything. i'm almost done with my second year of japanese and this would just tug at the back of my mind all day if i didn't get it out. gomennasai!

it's ok, i appreciate that. I actually pulled this phrase out of my grandfathers japanese-to-english dictionary that he used when he was in Guam so the script is very old and as I'm sure you're learning it seems to vary both regionally and over time as well.

I do however appreciate your input and don't find it rude at all :)

also, historicaly (and regionally) ha has been replaced by wa as in the case of "konnbanha." You can actually find that spelling in some OLD dictionaries and even some current online resources. Not sure if it's a regional dialect thing specifically or just one of those "over time" things "or just crappy translations!)

that makes sense. the old war translations books are hilarious. when i was younger, before taking the courses, i loved to flip through my grandfather's WWII translation book. it was small, orange, and had 'RESTRICTED' on the cover. it amused me.

I think I like this picture because it's beautiful but not flawless...
Once you look at it for a while you start to spot problems...

You know, I tried to clean it up and clean it up and the more I did the less "good" it looked.
I think the flaws really lend to that sumi-e look. Sumi-e work is never really about perfection but conveying the beauty of the image (to me anyway).

And there are also some that I probably should have fixed anyway, lol

Either way, thank you for the compliment. Even if you're spotting flaws, I appreciate the fact that you're spending time looking at it :D

If it was perfect, it would be missing something.

Hee hee, not at all. I wasn't in it for the prize. It'd have been nice to win, but the recognition and learning experience were enough for me. The resulting debate was just fun.
I've just been REALLY busy lately.
Thanks for the show of concern though. New stuff coming soon!!!

I think I like this one best for the simple message! It's great! The detail work on the brush handle is really inspiring. And you've got a wonderful thing coming along with the sumi strokes now. Nice work!
